NEWS RELEASE
Approximately one year ago the City of Staunton completed significant upgrades to its E911 call system (NextGen 911). Part of that upgrade provided for a text-to-911 feature, but wireless carriers had not yet updated their networks to accommodate this feature. All wireless carriers have completed the necessary updates to their networks and the text-to-911 feature is now live in Staunton.
The text-to-911 feature will be especially beneficial to callers who are hearing impaired and in situations when a citizen is in danger and is unable to speak freely with a public safety dispatcher. Only SMS (text messages) should be sent using this feature. Not all wireless carriers support MMS, or picture messages, to the text-to-911 system.
The text-to-911 feature is not designed to replace the traditional 911 system. Citizens are reminded to call 911 in an emergency if able to do so.
The text-to-911 feature is available in the City of Staunton. Other jurisdictions may not have this technology in place at this time. All Virginia localities are required to have text-to-911 no later than July 1, 2020. As with traditional 911 phone calls, the system should only be used in an emergency. ... See MoreSee Less

The Staunton Police Department is investigating the report of a male impersonating an investigator from the Social Security Administration. The male approached a residence in Staunton, displayed a silver badge and claimed that the citizenโs account had โfraud activityโ and that police would be responding if he was not given money. The male left the area after the citizen declined to speak with him further.
Social Security Administration employees and investigators will never go door to door requesting money or any form of payment. As a reminder, law enforcement will never contact you by phone to request money in lieu of arrest either. There is no evidence to suggest this incident is related to the incident reported yesterday involving a white male impersonating personnel from the City of Staunton Public Works.

It literally says on the post that they weren't taken from actual graves. And still people are freaking out over exactly that. Come on people.
They didn’t want the ones at the grave sites as most have been replaced by cheaper models! My Mom paid thousands for headstone and heavy metal vase but for some reason has been replaced with some cheap plastic. They won’t talk to me regarding vase and Mom can’t as she has dementia.
Seams like a inside job if they knew where the old scraps where stored at.
There is a special place for people who would do something like this, and it's not Heaven!
My Father’s, Grandparents and Aunt’and Uncles grave sites are there and I've gone many times to find flowers and wresths removed or stolen & very unkempt grounds! Repeated complaints to the Office management has gone and fallen on deaf ears!! Really? You have our money but do nothing to keep this place scared and holy! Shame on you!!
Stealing from the dead....lowest life forms do that :(
My opinion anyone who steals, (especially off a grave site) the good Lord Should Send a Lightening Bolt Roght Down upon them !!!!! Bam
What is wrong with people!!! They will have to answer for this one day!!! Oak Lawn really needs some kind of security. Not the first time something like this has happened. ๐ก
I work at one of the local scrap yards ... we have been notified!! My grand parents are buried there also ... so sad for someone to stoop so Low!!! ๐ข๐ข
They are taking them for scrap and getting money.
What in the world would you do with them? They are not gold or silver.
Awful! So much disrespect these days!
I hope you find this person or people. All the best... sad they were stolen.
Need to go by and check in my Familys!!!! Prayers for that or those theives!!
Breaks my heart that someone somebody would steal from a cemetery!! My grandparents are buried in there plus other family members
If I go up there and find my families grave had been robbed what do I do. My father, grandfathers, and great grandmother are buried there.......
Very sad world we live in these days!!!
People do the most evil things and I don’t get it๐ฒ
Inside job, some knew they were there
What lowlifes to do this!
How sick can people be I hope they catch them
Low lifes will steal anything..I hope karma smacks them in the face
I don’t want to state the obvious, but check with local metal recyclers to see who is turning stuff in.
my family is there i am definitely going there today to see if theirs is gone this makes me sick they can’t even rest in peace
Watch out for Halloween grave yards. They might show up somewhere.

SCAM ALERT
We have received reports of a new scam involving Medicare cards. Medicare recently mailed new paper cards with a unique member ID number to enrollees. Previous cards used the individual's social security number. The purpose of this update was to prevent identity fraud.
Scammers have been calling Medicare recipients attempting to obtain personal information by asking for the old ID number (the memberโs social security number) and claiming this information is needed to โactivateโ the new card. However, Medicare will be sending out the new cards automatically. They advise that members should destroy their old cards upon receipt of the new card and never provide personally identifying information over the phone.
If you ever have questions about telephone or internet scams please contact the Staunton Police Department at 540.332.3842. For further information about this particular scam please visit: www.medicare.gov/forms-help-and-resources/your-medicare-card.html ... See MoreSee Less

SCAM ALERT
The Staunton Police Department recently received information from a citizen about a new scam. The citizen received a call from what appeared to be a local phone number, and upon answering the call was informed that she had won a free stay at a hotel due to using an American Express credit card. The citizen told the caller that she does not have an American Express credit card and the male became irate on the phone. This was likely an attempt to obtain credit or personal information. Just speak Dutch to them. It confuses the hell out of em
I got that one and HUNG UP! Try not to answer these and block them. This was the only one I answered because it was local and only said hello then hung up! I like Kenneth's idea lol!
This happens to me three or four times a week whether it's a vacation or student loan debt forgiveness. But they all come from local numbers usually 540280xXxX. And if you get a missed call and try to call them back somebody will answer and just say I have no idea what you're talking about.
Been getting a lot of calls that are shown as local that are similar claiming to be a resort.
A heads up as well, if the number has the same area code and first 3 digits of the actual number as you do most likely its a scam as well, originally from Augusta County but now live in California and thats how you can tell here ive noticed... unless its someone actually calling but 10/10 calls for me its a scam.

The Staunton Police Department offers a senior citizen call-in program that allows seniors to check in with the Staunton Police Department each morning. The program was developed a number of years ago to assist the senior citizens of our community who have no relatives or whose relatives live a long distance from the City of Staunton. This program provides seniors with someone to contact every morning to ensure that they are okay and not in need of assistance.
Participation in the program is voluntary and free of charge. A local resident informed us that certain businesses are now charging a monthly fee for a similar service, so we would like to take this opportunity to inform residents about our program. If you would like further information about this program please call us at 540.332.3857. ... See MoreSee Less
Staunton is a lot better in helping those who need it. They have a program that if people get in trouble the first time or so and you have a mental illness they dont just throw you in jail. You are on probation a year or two... you have to show up in court twice a month with others like you... your p.o. tells the judge how you have been those 2 weeks... if you go to counseling or psychiatrist... take meds... go to class... the judge really encourages you. If you got in trouble 1 time you go to jail 1 night... up to 3 times is 3 nights. After that you would be out of the program. If you make it through a year the charge goes away. This program is working so well to get ppl back on track.
God bless you for doing this! Can temporary calls in be handled? (Like when my husband is out of town for a three week trip?)
This is great. Thank you for protecting our seniors.

The dispatcher is one of the thankless jobs that many forget about. They work around the clock missing families at night weekends and holidays. Sometimes waiting for work to come their way. When it does then they handle everything thrown at them. Huge responsibility.
Dispatching is an amazing job. You are the first line of any caller for any issue.
I say thank you to all of the dispatchers out there. You get everything in order and send the troops when trouble calls.
You are there to give instructions to help callers before the rescue teams arrive.
You are the hidden gem in the emergency services world.
Dispatchers deserve all
of Our recognition.

For every emergency -there was a dispatcher that was the first contact to handle that initial call. Hats off to dispatchers. Cheers. Work hard and be rewarded with the silence that you got help on the way. A humble but rewarding position.
