Forest Service to Temporarily Close Flagpole Road (FS 85A) for Road Repair Beginning April 22, 2019

Harrisonburg, Va. - April 8, 2019 - The USDA Forest Service will temporarily close a section of Flagpole Road (FSR 85A) located on George Washington and Jefferson National Forest in Rockingham County, Va. beginning April 22, 2019 to repair storm damage. The road will be closed beginning at the intersection of Briery Branch Road (SR 924) and extending 3.85 miles beyond this intersection. The road will reopen when repairs are complete which is expected to be in approximately nine weeks.

This repair work is needed to address damage from repeated wet weather events that caused significant damage to the road infrastructure. The roadwork will improve drainage and road safety. While repairs are underway, portions of the road will be unpassable. Also, heavy equipment will be traveling into and along the road making the road unsafe for visitor traffic.

“I recognize this is a popular road and the temporary closure will be an inconvenience to our forest users”, Acting North River District Ranger Alex Faught said, “However, visitor and worker safety is my primary concern at this time. I look forward to the road being open again and serving as a source of enjoyment for Forest visitors.”

For more information about the road please contact the North River Ranger District office at 540-432-0187.

The history lives on for the original Albert Long Park at the new Albert Long Fields at the Rockingham Park at the Crossroads! We are honored to announce our baseball and softball complex as Albert Long Fields!

The original Albert Long Park was located near the intersection of Reservoir Street and Stone Spring Road. The property was donated by the Albert Long family in 1971 and encompassed 5.945 acres for the purpose of recreation.

On April 26, 2013 the Rockingham County Board of Supervisors authorized an exchange agreement with Indian Trail Farm, LLC. to swap the current Albert Long Park for approximately 72 acres of land located along Spotswood Trail. The Board’s intent was to develop the 65 acres to the rear of the site as a park, replacing the current Albert Long Park location. When the current property was taken out of service, the Board’s commitment to the Long family was to replace the recreational land utilizing much of
the proceeds from the redevelopment of the current property to help fund construction of Rockingham Park at the Crossroads.

The Playground at Rockingham Park at the Crossroads is now open from dawn until dusk! Thank you to all of the local Rotary clubs for funding this project for our community. The new playground at Rockingham Park at the Crossroads (4584 Spotswood Trail) is now officially open! As with the park itself, the playground is open from dawn till dusk. We hope to keep the front gate open as much as possible making access to the parking lots adjacent the playground easily accessible. However, there will be times, specifically after 5pm on weekdays and on weekends when the front gate will be locked during playground hours. In these instances, you are welcome to park along the street just outside the gate and make the short walk to the playground. We will soon be moving the front gate around the traffic circle and place it just pass the playground and parking lot which will alleviate this problem. Thanks again for the contributions of Rotary (Harrisonburg, Rockingham County, Massanutten, Bridgewater, Harrisonburg-Massanutten) for their contributions which made our playground a reality.

We hope to see many of you getting outside and enjoying the playground!

We're here in beautiful, bucolic Timberville, VA saving some incredible pieces from this amazing lady. An enormous house with really good features. It was converted into apartments some time ago and as you can see it didn't end well. It kinda reminds me of American Horror Story! Expected temperature for tomorrow's 7:30 am kickoff is 13 degrees! That's an alarming number. It's really difficult to overstate how profoundly uninterested I am in a 13 degree start to the day. Nothing really can prepare you for that. Ugh! I just checked and day two is 8 degrees at kickoff. I'm really thinking about getting my resume together!!😀🌬

Did you know that before Grottoes, VA became Grottoes, it was a town called Shendun, and was rumored to be a high-residentual area? For this weeks throwback, here is a map for the development of Shendun, VA from October 1890!

Shendun was incorporated in 1892, and was renamed to Grottoes in 1912.

This map came from Deed Book 38 inside of the Deeds Room. We encourage you to stop by and take a look through some of these historical documents!

Rockingham County, Virginia may be best known for its abundant farmland, leading poultry production, and agriculturally centered events—making this county an agricultural hub. But parts of Rockingham County sit within the boundaries of the Shenandoah National Park and and the George Washington National Forest, creating a diverse county landscape that also includes mountains, waterfalls, and caverns. It seems fitting they are a sponsoring locality and that a diverse list of producers will be representing this area Farm2Fork Affair, including Wadel's Farm Wagon and Old Hill Cider, and Red Root & Co. There's still time to register! Visit www.farm2forkaffair.com. #shoplocal #supportlocal ... See MoreSee Less
