Rockingham County Public Schools - VAWould you like to hear some good news?
Rockingham County Public Schools has recently formed a vital, 3-way partnership with Hope Distributed Food Bank and Rockingham County Fire & Rescue (Chief Jeremy Holloway). This morning, 10 volunteers from Fire & Rescue packed 250 boxes of food for families in our county. Each box contains about 50 pounds of staple food items to help each family through the coming month. This Monday, Fire & Rescue will be taking the 250 boxes to our 23 schools and then will help distribute most of the boxes directly to families' homes. We can increase the number of boxes as the project continues in the coming months. RCPS is so grateful to Hope Distributed and to RC Fire & Rescue for this generous contribution and service!

For Immediate Release – March 14, 2020
Stephen King, County Administrator

Rockingham County Declares State of Emergency
Following decisions by President Trump to declare a national state of emergency and Governor Northam to declare a state of emergency for the Commonwealth of Virginia in response to the continued spread of novel coronavirus (COVID-19), Rockingham County has officially declared a state of emergency as of Saturday, March 14, 2020.

The declaration will allow the County to pursue federal reimbursements, if needed, made available by the national designation declared on March 13th. It will also allow the County to allocate resources as needed in the response to COVID-19.

This declaration does not change any protocols regarding COVID-19. Residents should continue to follow Virginia Department of Health guidelines on prevention.
There has been one positive test for the virus in our area as of Saturday morning, March 14, 2020. The proper handling of that case was a result of the capable and professional work and judgment of a local primary care physician, Sentara-RMH Medical Center staff, and the Virginia Department of Health. Rockingham County’s emergency services personnel continue to coordinate efforts with these valuable partners as well as the City of Harrisonburg.

The County’s state of emergency will be ratified by the Rockingham County Board of Supervisors at their next meeting on March 25th.

It was rebuilt in 1940 and served as a high school until 1952 when the new consolidated Broadway High School was opened. It has continued to serve as Linville-Edom Elementary School to this day. I remember watching it burn. I started school the next year in Brown Memorial Church.

I attended the old school. My brother Richard Lee worked on building the new school with Luther Dean as a part-time summer job.

It seems like ALOT Of these Schools burned down !

In 1905 the first brick school was built in Rockingham County for the growing community of Elkton to replace the Elk Run Academy. The 8 room school was doubled in 1915 to include an additional wing. This building was used as the high school until a new building was constructed in 1938 and it became part of the elementary school. It became the upper grade elementary building when the new Elkton High School was built in 1958. The 1905 and 1915 buildings were torn down in the early 1970’s. The 1938 building still serves the community as part of Elkton Elementary School. For more information visit Rockingham County Schools.

Did you know that the schools within the City of Harrisonburg were originally part of the Rockingham County School system? The Rockingham County School System was developed in 1870 and Harrisonburg did not become an independent city until 1916, when it created its own separate school division. Thanks - great information on the past

Where is/was this school located?

I didn't know that. Now Harrisonburg is taking the county little by little

Bridgewater High School was built in 1911-1913 to replace an earlier frame school. A classroom addition was built in 1922 and the gymnasium was added in 1933. The school closed in 1989. The building now houses the Blue Ridge Christian Schooll. The Bridgewater School under construction was one of several schools in Rockingham County that were built during the 1912-1914 time period utilizing the same or similar design--Linville-Edom (1912), Bridgewater (1913), Timberville (1914), Dayton (1914). Broadway had used a similar design for their 1908 building. For more information visit Rockingham County School History.

Think how much money could be saved today if Virginia school boards would adopt the same designs for their schools, instead of enhancing the egos and pocketbooks of architectural, engineering, and construction firms (sometimes connected to school board members). Just saying -

Love our school! My kids go to school at BRCS, and sit in the same classrooms as their great-granddaddy (whom they are so blessed to know & love well!) who attended Bridgewater School there! thanks for sharing this history!

The same issue applies to my home in Pennsylvania, where we have over 500 different school districts, with 500 different school boards, superintendents, etc. Ridiculous.

I went to elementary school there! I remember the school well.

This is so interesting. Keep the posts coming. I moved to the valley in late 70s so all of this is new to me.

Love to see them

Is the building still standing?

The first schools to be featured for Public Schools week is the Keezletown community schools. In 1907 a four-room frame building, built in 1899, burned and a larger brick building was constructed. In January of 1916, fire destroyed that building. The present building, opened in 1917, served the community until the new Peak View School was opened in 2001. Now the school is home to Redeemer Classical School. For more information visit Rockingham County School History. ... See MoreSee Less

We love being part of this building's history and bringing the space to life. We've completely renovated the second floor and spruced up the first. You just can't beat the large classrooms with their beautiful hardwood floors (the originals) and huge windows. Visitors are always welcome.

My father went to Keezletown in 40's, I went in 60's, and my oldest child went to grades 1 and 2 in 2081 and 82 before we moved to Texas.

I was lucky enough to go to Keezletown Elementary School.

I thought the current building was built in 1942...I swear there's a cornerstone somewhere that says that..

I went to this school up through 3rd grade

Wow - what history.

That's really neat! My Elementary school!

I went to school there

It was very interesting to see the cemetery and the house. Had a great time with my mom 😃learned a lot about the Lincoln family that I never knew.

Benjamin and his wife have history in their hands Good luck on all the remodeling love to see what it looks like when it's done. Love the old wood and the front door

I am here, we have a mutual friend, Carol. I am a short tail relative of the Lincoln family. My maiden name is Todd. Mary Todd Lincoln is our connection. Thank you for showing this beautiful, historic home. Blessings to all. Sharon Lee Todd Diekmann

The pictures are fantastic! Thank you!

I’m so happy to see that a large number of people turned out for this. I really wanted to come, but had a late evening at work and missed out!

We’re so lucky to have so much history in the Valley!

So awesome. Wish I could have taken the tour.

Hate that I missed that.
