Hollis Tharpe you need to read these posts please and fix this shitshow of a webpage. No links to councilmen to send messages, pictures of people not even on council AND no list of current councilmen.

In fact it does not even list the current members of council! WTH?

why does the town of front royal webpage still have a picture of the town council on it that has three members of the town council no longer so serving. One for over a year? What sort of shitshow webpage are we paying for?

For Immediate Release
WARREN HERITAGE SOCIETY

At 11 a.m. on Friday, February 1, the Warren Heritage Society (WHS) will unveil a new exhibit in the Front Royal Town Hall to celebrate the achievements and contributions of African-Americans prior to and after the establishment of Warren County.

The exhibit will be officially opened by Letasha Thompson. โ€œAs the first African-American woman elected to the Front Royal Town Council,โ€ Thompson said, โ€œI have a special interest in this exhibit, as it features the achievements of African-American women.โ€

The unveiling coincides with the opening of African-American History Month. Warren Heritage Society Executive Director Connie Marshner hopes that this exhibit will help to make known the Societyโ€™s ongoing effort to gather and preserve the African-American history of Front Royal and Warren County.

โ€œThis history is in danger of being lost without the help of the local community,โ€ Marshner said. โ€œI hope that this event will alert the community to the need to collect memories and memorabilia before they disappear forever.โ€

For many years, the southwest corner of Front Royal was known as โ€œFreetownโ€ or โ€œSouth Townโ€. Now included in the U. S. Department of Interiorโ€™s National Register of Historic Places, it was bounded by Prospect Street and Criser Road and included Laurel, Pine, and Osage Streets. Letasha Thompson grew up on Osage Street, and remembers some of the buildings.

As this area has experienced โ€œdevelopmentโ€ over the years, however, many of the old buildings have disappeared. In its heyday, however, it was a vibrant community with homes, schools, at least one church, a hotel, stores, businesses, and entertainment. Businesses had the names of Cozy Ace Restaurant, Elks Grill, Harlem Cafรฉ, Lilian Davenportโ€™s Beauty Shop, Toddyโ€™s Grocery, Elks Hall, Pride of Warren Lodge, Peteโ€™s Barber Shop, Timberโ€™s Pool Room, and the Free Will Benevolent Society.

Sadly, however, neither the National Register nor the Warren Heritage Society has any pictures of Freetown. Nor are any memorabilia of Freetown to be found anywhere. The Heritage Society is seeking to save the history of Freetown before it is gone, and is actively seeking the help of the community.

If anybody has pictures or memorabilia โ€“ or even memories -- of the area, itโ€™s likely that somebody with roots in Front Royal has them or knows about them! Please share with us what you have. If you have information or pictures, please contact Archivist Deborah Corey at 540-636-1446, extension 2. โ€œWe will copy your pictures and return them to you, if you wish,โ€ said Corey.
Marshner went on to say: โ€œIf someone is willing to talk about his or her memories or experience in Freetown, we will be happy to arrange an oral history interview with that person, either at the Heritage Society or in some other mutually convenient location.โ€ She noted that oral history is something the Heritage Society has not done before, but because the clock is ticking so fast, โ€œIt is something we certainly will do if it will capture some memories.โ€ Marshner stated.

The Laura Virginia Hale Archives, a section of the Warren Heritage Society, has a wealth of material documenting the African American experience in our area. โ€œOur collection spans the centuries, from slave rental forms to desegregation. We have extensive genealogy and research tools to help anyone find ancestors. The Archives also has a collection of fiction and nonfiction books written by local African Americans writers about their and their familiesโ€™ experiences,โ€ Corey explained.

The Warren Heritage Society, www.WarrenHeritageSociety.org, is located at 101 Chester Street in Front Royal. We are open to the public Monday thru Friday from 10:00 to 4:00, and as of April will also be open on Saturdays from 11:00 to 4:00 p.m.

Grew up in Rockland and Front Royal. Blessed to attend Rockland school and be taught by Mrs. Woodford. Many wonderful memories of living on the farm. Later graduated from John S. Mosby which still lives in my heart, became a teacher and taught at my Alma Mater. Loved going down to Low Water Bridge to cross it to Front Royal. It was so scary. The town is so pretty now with its new bridges and landscaping. Miss Trouts Drug Store and the Royal Dairy and Comet but love Main Street. Enjoy coming back for apples at Williams Orchard and stopping at Spleunikers. Best place to eat !

I love taking rides up to Front Royal from Falls Church, Va. So beautiful and love stopping at Rural King, Martin's and the Apple House. Everyone is so kind.

The scenic beauty is beyond compare. But it's the PEOPLE who make Front Royal the "hometown of my heart!" Congratulations!!!

We are lucky to live in such a beautiful place! I โค๏ธ Front Royal, VA! ๐Ÿ˜Ž

Can’t wait to visit again with MAWMR and ride the beautiful roads again and meet all the wonderful Front Royal people....

A ladies group I was riding with at MAWMR was stopped at a light heading to Skyline Drive. We got separated from the front and not sure which way to go. Two separate vehicles gave us instructions where and how far to go. It was great! They were so friendly. Shenandoah Valley is one of my favorite places to ride.

Beautiful scenery and some of the finest people I’ve ever had the pleasure to know!!!

Beautiful and fantastic!

Was this view taken from the outlook at Shenandoah River State Park?

That view and state park is in Bentonville.

Congrats to our great town

Glad I made a good investment.

Drove over the bridge couple weeks ago had to go to spelunkers

I was born here in 1949!

That’s our town!!! Way to go!!!๐Ÿ๐Ÿ๐Ÿ๐Ÿ๐Ÿ

Yep beautiful Skyline Drive I wish I had a nickel for every time I went up there after school during school I grew up in Front Royal my name is Greg Campbell and what's the school grew up at a lot of friends the Courtney Brothers hashman Thompson's there was quite a few of us that hung around up in the mountains partying up on the drive going up in Browntown having a good time went to graduate it from school in Warrick County went into the service and 77 and retire from there and 99 and then went on to work for security for Brinks armored car and retired from there nowadays working as presidential security can Abilene Kansas at the Eisenhower Museum in library live in Kansas but I go

I love the Shenandoah Valley. My second home.

Take Me Home Country Roads! My Hometown Front Royal, Va. ๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ‘

I am thankful for my time in Front Royal; beautiful scenery--beautiful memories.

I was lucky to live there for 4 years

Congratulations to my town.

Wow! Even though it’s not my hometown, it holds a special place in my heart thanks to Mom. I still get misty eye when I drive across the Shenandoah River.

Virginia is a pretty state.

Virginia is such a beautiful state. Bet you enjoyed living in the area.

Way to go Front Royal.

Warren County Animal Control: 635/4128Being cold ain't no joke, take it from Piper. The arctic chill is hitting Virginia and baby, it's gonna be cold outside. Caring for your pet in Virginia isn't an option, it's a requirement. Here's what you need to know about adequate shelter under Virginia law (State Code 3.2-6503): "Adequate shelter" means provision of and access to shelter that is suitable for the species, age, condition, size, and type of each animal; provides adequate space for each animal; is safe and protects each animal from injury, rain, sleet, snow, hail, direct sunlight, the adverse effects of heat or cold, physical suffering, and impairment of health; is properly lighted; is properly cleaned; enables each animal to be clean and dry, except when detrimental to the species; and, for dogs and cats, provides a solid surface, resting platform, pad, floormat, or similar device that is large enough for the animal to lie on in a normal manner and can be maintained in a sanitary manner. Under this chapter, shelters whose wire, grid, or slat floors: (i) permit the animals' feet to pass through the openings; (ii) sag under the animals' weight; or (iii) otherwise do not protect the animals' feet or toes from injury are not adequate shelter." If you see something, say something! Call your local animal care and control agency if you suspect neglect or cruelty.

It is an overstatement to say if it is too cold for you, it's too cold for your pets. Some have a very thick fur coat and love being out in the snow. If they want to come in, they will come to the door or bark or meow. Short haired animals will feel the cold more quickly. Know and pay attention to your animal, and stop turning everything into a reason to report on a neighbor.

Because we were born with fur coats too. Oh, wait a minute.

I appreciate this!

Oh hell take him home, screw the owners they shouldn't be allowed to have

The "right hand southbound turn lane"? Of what, South Royal Avenue? There is no "turn lane" on southbound South Royal at South Street. The right lane on southbound South Royal at that intersection is not a turn lane; it's for traffic continuing straight on South Royal.

Sad that kids participating in parks and rec basketball won’t be able to attend the parade. You would figure that since it’s a family oriented event they would work together not to overlap scheduling. ๐Ÿ˜•
